During the Renaissance period in Italy, a woman named Signora Toffana created a face powder called Aqua Toffana, which, was made from arsenic. And all though makeup was seen a threat to health in the Elizabethan England women continued to try different tricks to makeup up their faces, such as using egg whites as a form of face powder.
The bright red colors for lips and cheeks became fashionable in 18th century France, but it was a dangerous time for makeup as most of it was made from mercury, belladonna and lead.
During Victorian times a more natural look became favored and women who wore too much makeup were considered of bad reputation. The "proper" lady of those times only had to pinch her cheeks and use some rice powder to remove shine from the face.

Who Invented Makeup
There is not one person that can be attributed with the invention of makeup, as is seen by history women have found ways to make themselves up using ingenuity and their imagination in any way they can. But, the topic of who invented makeup, as we know it today, mainly centers on the makeup giants with whom it all began, Maybelline, Max Factor and Revlon.
Maybelline

Maybelline was founded by sisters who invented the first mascara.
Max Factor
Max Factor developed their first makeup product in 1914, in the form of pancake powder and it became very popular.
RevlonRevlon was founded in 1932 and gained huge popularity with the introduction with one of the most popular lipstick of all time, "Cherries in the Snow."
The rest as they say is history, and these companies and of course many more continue to create makeup and revolutionize the industry.
